House
Speaker Pro-Tem Mark Burkhalter announced today he would not seek the GOP
nomination for Ga. Governor in 2010.
Burkhalter,
considered by many to be a potential frontrunner in the race if he got in,
decided to stay in the Georgia House of Representatives.
“After
careful consideration, I have decided that I can best serve the citizens of
Georgia, and my constituents by continuing my role as Speaker Pro Tempore of
the Georgia House.” Burkhalter said. “I will continue to work diligently to
help the GOP maintain and grow the majority that we won in the House five years
ago.”
Sources
inside the Burkhalter camp told The Beacon they were convinced their man could win.
They said the final decision made by Burkhalter was based on where the Johns
Creek legislator believed he could have the most positive impact on the state.
“I
am confident Republicans will produce a gubernatorial candidate that our party
will unite behind to win the 2010 general election. I wish the best to each candidate,” Burkhalter added.
The
field is now cleared for Sec. of State Karen Handel to gain enormous ground in
the coming weeks in her gubernatorial effort.
Congressman
Lynn Westmorland is also seriously considering the race and he would join
Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and Rep. Austin Scott as the other GOP
contenders.
