Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker's (D) decision to get in the governor's race may have opened the door for Republicans to take his office over in 2010.

Three term Ga. House member Ed Lindsey (R-Buckhead), calling it a unique opportunity of a lifetime, says he is seriously considering running for Georgia Attorney General in 2010. Lindsey stated that his decision would come very soon. "I am right now weighing it against the obligations that I have to my family and my business, and both of those [trump] politics," he explained.

Lindsey explained that his interest in the race is borne out of the impact he believes he can have on the AG's office if he wins. "I understand the impact that our state's laws have on the private sector, and I have an unparalleled empathy for the business community in this troubled economic time," Lindsey said.

ISSUES KEY

Lindsey promised a highbrow issue-oriented campaign if he gets in the race. "Our state will be facing enormous legal issues in the very near future, and I intend to tackle each of them with equal vigor," he said. Lindsey asserted the key issues facing Georgia's next AG include voting rights, the 2010 census and relative redistricting, mortgage fraud, proper interpretation of environmental laws, and laws affecting Georgia's consumers.

Lindsey's resume is likely to be a campaign asset if he runs. He has been a trial lawyer for 25 years, and he built a successful and booming law practice from scratch. His firm now employs 30 lawyers in two states. He will no doubt cite his entrepreneurial accomplishments as an underlying baseline in a potential campaign. "I have created jobs," Lindsey said.

Ed Lindsey is considering a run for Attorney General and could enter the contest as the favorite to win the GOP nod.

EXCITING RACE TO RUN

Sounding very much like a candidate now, Lindsey said it would be an exciting race to run. "The last time the office for Attorney General has come up without an incumbent running for re-election was 1942," Lindsey said. "There have only been four Georgia Attorneys General in my lifetime."

OTHER CANDIDATES

If Lindsey runs, he is guaranteed Republican primary opposition. Marietta State Senator Judson Hill has told supporters he will run and others are soon to follow, like Rome State Senator Preston Smith and Blue Ridge House Rep. David Ralston.

In a multiple GOP field, Lindsey would enter the contest as the front-runner, based on his deep Republican support in Fulton and Gwinnett Counties. Lindsey is a very powerful and tireless campaigner; he has the contacts to raise a lot of money quickly and enjoys the support of many Fulton County legislators. This combination makes him the man to beat out of the gate.
